A hearing to determine custody of the 69 dogs and puppies rescued from what a state agency is calling an “unlicensed and substandard puppy mill” that was located south of Rolla was rescheduled by the court to Thursday, May 14.
The puppies and dogs were removed from a breeding facility located in the 10000 block of County Road 5160 on April 28 by the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force.
Citing too few cages and filthy conditions, the officials with the task force removed miniature schnauzers, poodles, Pekinese, cocker spaniels, beagles and Yorkshire terriers in the rescue and relocated them to Humane Society Headquarters on Macklind Avenue in St. Louis.
The task force said the animals were housed in too few wire cages for their numbers, and they had limited access to solid footing, as the cages had wire floors, which can cause paw and leg problems. Several new-born puppies and a mother dog were housed in one of the wire-bottom cages that did not have bedding.
Moreover, the animals’ cages were caked with feces and urine, members of the task force said.
If custody of the dogs is awarded to the Humane Society, as many of the animals as possible will be made available for adoption, the agency said.
Persons interested in adopting one of the rescued dogs should visit the Humane Society of Missouri’s Web site at hsmo.org to check availability and the adoption location.
Also, the Humane Society has two hotlines: Report Animal Abuse at (314) 647-4400; Donations at (314) 951-1542.
