Superintendent John Westerman gave the Newburg Board of Education a negative report on future state funding during the board’s meeting earlier this month.
“In one of my meetings we have been told to be expecting a 9 to 14 percent reduction in state formula funds,” Westerman said.
How much of a cut, if any, the district could expect, Westerman did not offer the Board.
“The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is not talking about it at all,” Westerman said, adding DESE proposed a budget with some increases.
He did say if estimates are correct, the district could lose more than $200,000 in state funding, which makes up 57 percent of its budget. He estimated the district could cut $120,000 through attrition, but advised board members to be contemplating how more money could be saved.
“We would be idiots not to be looking at it at this point,” Westerman said.
