Newburg, Mo. -

The base pay for first-year teachers at Newburg will increase from $24,579 to $26,579, according to Newburg Superintendent Mike Bumgarner, after the June School Board meeting.

“Actually, all of our school employees will see an increase in pay of $2,000, certified and non-certified, with the exception of our bus drivers. The bus drivers had to be pro-rated because they’re part-time, but they also will receive an increase of $1,200,” said Bumgarner.

Bumgarner said the increase was possible because of the new foundation formula which began in fiscal year 2007, and because of the last tax re-assessment.
The foundation formula implements statewide funding increases gradually during the next several years.

The formula began to be implemented in fiscal year 2007. The system won’t be fully funded until 2014, when more than $800 million will be added to the Missouri budget for K-12 education.

“The new formula has been good for our district,” said Bumgarner.

Four teachers’ resignations also were accepted by the board at the meeting, those of Ashley Hibbs, Donovan Hibbs, Betty Gibson and Jami Engelbrecht.

Two new teachers were hired; Diane Martin, fourth grade, and Melissa Butler, first grade.

Brenda Nash also was hired for a custodial position.
Previously, Newburg Schools had two portable “SMART Boards,” the teachers shared. A SMART Board is an interactive electronic white board that can enhance instruction and learning.

Newburg schools will be purchasing three additional SMART Boards because of a significant grant received.

Four teachers, Don Copeland, high school business, Christie Campbell, fifth and sixth grade science, Diedre Eastman, third grade and Oleta Rhoades, high school communication arts will attend SMART Board Academy in August.
