Founded in 1991 by then-Superintendent of Schools Dr. D. Kent King, CORE, the Champions of Rolla, has enriched the lives of thousands of students in Rolla Public Schools.

This enrichment comes in the form of field trips, equipment and speakers.

And none of it is paid for by the taxpayers.

Instead, it is paid by memberships of the organization, along with one major fundraiser and the operation of the Rolla License Fee Office.

Tracy Phenix, president of the school foundation, spoke to the Rolla Board of Education Thursday night, giving an overview of the organization and noting that the 2012 membership drive is under way.

“Our 2012 membership driver kicked off this week, with a goal of increasing both individual and corporate memberships,’ Phenix said. “CORE hopes to continue to increase their support of enrichment programs and activities in each of the Rolla Public Schools, impacting students at every grade level.”

Membership levels in CORE are:

• $50 for an individual membership,
• $75 for a couple/family membership,
• $250 for a corporate membership,
• $25 for Rolla Public School employee.

To join, call the Administration Building at 458-0100 and ask for CORE, or log onto www.rolla.k12.mo.us/community/core for a membership form.
Phenix told the board the CORE foundation began operating the license fee office in 1994 and has raised $100,000 that has been pumped back into the schools for enrichment programs.

The organization’s original mission statement, still valid, calls for use of foundation funds to pay for programs when no other source of funding is available.

CORE funds are used to pay for student trips to the Missouri State Capitol and Governor’s Mansion, Powell Symphony Hall and missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis, the St. Louis Zoo and the St. Louis City Museum.

Phenix said local field trips are also financed, including trips to local farms and visits to Leach Theatre at Castleman Hall for performances.
CORE funds outdoor classrooms and new science equipment.

Major help comes from Phelps County Bank, Brewer Science and Panera.

CORE’s annual Honors Banquet recognizes top students and brings in a guest speaker.

CORE also administers scholarships that are funded by other organizations.

Phenix said CORE is grateful o the community for its support.
