For those who didn’t know, the best Missouri high school art teacher is in Rolla.

Shannon Engelbrecht was named the 2010 best art teacher for secondary schools by the Missouri Art Education Association last week.

“It’s incredible that other people have seen the work I have done —  I can’t really put it into words,” Engelbrecht said.

The MAEA’s stated goal is to “advocate quality visual arts education,” according to the group’s Web site. To do so, the organization aims to promote collaboration between teachers, provide access to needed resources and opportunities for professional development.

“We love to support our teachers when they get involved in these types of organizations because it is good for personal and professional growth, and it benefits our students,” said Rolla High School Principal Nathan Hoven.

Engelbrecht won’t be alone during the award ceremony in March — her’s is just one of several that MAEA gives out to educators every year.

To be eligible, teachers have to be members of the organization and be nominated by another teacher. Engelbrecht received the nomination from her friend and fellow art teacher at the Russellville Middle School, Amy Potts.
