The Rolla softball team traveled to St. James for a matchup with the Lady Tigers on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The Rolla bats were hot early and never cooled off on their way to a 21-3 victory in five innings.
The Lady Bulldogs were the first on the board in the top of the first, as Emalee Grooms reached on a single, before swiping second. She then came across to score on an RBI single by Kristynn Hufford to take a 1-0 lead. After St. James was quiet in the bottom of the frame, Rolla struck for four runs in the top of the second. Grooms capped off the inning with the biggest hit of the night, a two-run inside-the-park home run to right field. That gave Rolla a quick 5-1 lead.
St. James was able to get on the board in the bottom of the frame thanks to a couple of defensive miscues. Mikaela Donnelly led off the inning with a single and came all the way around to score when an attempted pickoff wound up in right field. Another run scored after an infield single by starting pitcher Audrey Marcee. She was able to score after a grounder by Baylee Ambrose resulted in a wild throw to first. St. James wasn't able to add to the scoring effort, but cut the score to 5-2.
Rolla put the game away in the top of the third inning, exploding for eight runs. The first run came across to score after a bases loaded walk by Reagan Reedy. Keira Chrisco then had an RBI single that turned into three runs on an errant throw. Chrisco found herself on third base and scored on an errant throw later in the inning. Two more came across to score on a double by Hufford. Hufford then went to third on a wild pitch and scored as Donnelly attempted to pick her off at third, but the throw clanged off the helmet of Kassidy Chrisco and went out of play. That run gave Rolla a 13-2 lead. St. James added a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Hunter Pitts.
The fourth inning came and went with no runs scored by either team, but Rolla finished off the mercy rule win with eight more runs in the fifth.
