The Missouri S&T softball team (25-25) wrapped up their regular season with a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend. The Lady Miners split their doubleheader with Indy on Saturday, before splitting with Wisconsin Parkside on Sunday. With the pair of wins, Missouri S&T secured a spot in the GLVC Tournament, claiming the eighth and final seed.
UIndy Game 1:
The Lady Miners didn't get off to the start they wanted to on Saturday, getting run-ruled 11-1 in five innings against Indy. Indy scored three runs in each of the first two innings, before burying S&T with five in the fourth.
The lone run from S&T came on an RBI single by Abby Klein (Kansas City, Mo/Staley) in the top of the third. S&T had just two base hits in the loss.
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) took the loss for the Lady Miners, allowing 11 runs, two of which were unearned, on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking one.
UIndy Game 2:
The Lady Miners bounced back for a 7-2 win over the Greyhounds. The scoring got started in the second inning with a three-run triple from Olivia Young (Milstadt, Ill./Belleville Township). Indy responded with runs in the third and fourth, but the Lady Miners put the game away with a four-run fifth. Carley Hamann (Frankfork, Ill./Lincoln Way North) drove in two runs, before a run scored on a passed ball and Courtney Jackson (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) added an RBI infield single.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) toed the rubber for S&T, earning the win with a complete game. She allowed two earned runs on six hits and five walks, while striking out one.
Wisconsin-Parkside Game 1:
The Lady Miners needed extra innings to pull out the win in their first game with Wisconsin-Parkside, but it was worth the wait. With the game tied at two through seven innings, S&T found some magic from Gretchen Egly (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central). Egly hit a two-out RBI single to give the Lady Miners the lead, before a walk set up Ashley Davis (Erie, Ill./Erie) for a two-run double for a couple of insurance runs, lifting the Lady Miners to a 5-2 win.
The three runs in the top of the eighth helped lift English to the victory. She pitched all eight innings in the win. The sophomore pitched allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five.
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo/Marquette) led S&T with three hits in the win.
Wisconsin-Parkside Game 2:
Missouri S&T couldn't find that offensive spark in a 4-1 loss in game two. The game was locked at one going into the fifth, where UW-Parkside scored three runs on their way to the win. The game-wining runs came off of English, who came in to relieve Viets in the inning.
Viets pitched the first four innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out two. English's first inning of work ended up being her downfall, as she allowed three runs in the fifth, before a shutout sixth. She surrendered four hits and struck out two.
Despite the loss in game two, the Lady Miners were able to secure the eighth and final seed on the GLVC Tournament, which will be played in East Peoria, Ill. This is S&T's first bid in the conference tournament since 2010. The Lady Miners will open the double elimination tournament against the regular season champions, Illinois-Springfield on Thursday, May 3. The tournament will run through Saturday.
