OZARK, Mo. – Behind another strong pitching performance from the reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference pitcher of the week, Missouri S&T got a split of its doubleheader Saturday afternoon against West Division leader Drury by taking game two 4-1.
The Panthers, who had their 10-game winning streak snapped with the loss in the nightcap, won the opener 7-4.
Dan Borek (Greenville, WI/Hortonville), who threw a one-hit shutout Sunday against William Jewell to earn last week's conference honor, followed up that performance by holding Drury to two hits in his winning effort. Both of the Panther hits came in the fourth inning, as Brant Schaffizel led off the inning with a double and later scored on KK Daniel's hit.
But that was it for the Panthers offensively, as Borek set them down in order in the other six innings of the contest as he improved to 5-4 on the year.
The Miners (16-16, 7-7 GLVC) had taken the lead in the opening inning when Tim Lira (Granger, IN/Penn) singled home Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing), who was hit by a pitch to open the contest.
S&T added to its lead in the second when Conner Forsythe (Farmington, MO/Farmington) scored on a ground ball off the bat of Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield), then scored again in the third as Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) brought home Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) with an RBI single. After Drury (20-11, 11-3 GLVC) got on the board in the fourth, the Miners got that run right back in the fifth as Lira doubled and scored when Knickerbocker reached on an infield hit and the ball was thrown away by Panther starter Spencer Witherspoon.
The Miners outhit the Panthers 9-2 as Lira has three hits to lead the way.
In game one, the Miners fell behind in the opening inning but put two on the board in the second as Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) tripled in Lira – who had singled to start the frame – and scored moments later on a hit by Jason Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty). S&T held onto that lead until the fifth, when the Panthers tied the score on Daniel's RBI double.
Drury scored twice in the seventh to take the lead back before S&T cut that margin in half on an RBI groundout by Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah). However, the Panthers extended their lead against the S&T bullpen with three runs in the eighth before the Miners got one in the ninth on Nathan Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty)'s pinch-hit single that scored Knickerbocker.
The Miners were outhit 13-7 in the first game with seven different players getting hits. Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) took the loss on the mount.
Missouri S&T and Drury will close out the weekend series Monday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the S&T Ballpark.
