The Rolla baseball team (5-0-1) kicked off the Midwest Classic with a pair of games on Wednesday, March 28. The Bulldogs had to fight through the weather all day long, but still pulled out a 9-0 victory over Francis Howell, before their game against CBC ended in a 3-3 tie due to weather.
The Bulldogs had a dominant game all-around against Francis Howell and that started with stellar pitching. Treyton Ruth had a masterful performance on the mound for Rolla, allowing just four hits in the game. The junior pitched a complete game shutout, struck out six and walked one batter to earn the win for the Bulldogs.
Ruth then got some great support from the Rolla bats. The Bulldogs hit the ground running, scoring in each of the first four innings. Rolla only had one inning that they didn't score in as they rolled past the Vikings. Blaize Klossner had a near perfect game at the plate, going 2-2 with a walk, while scoing three runs and driving in two. Davie Pound added a pair of hits, two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base to help lead the scoring charge. Zeke Arthur, Noah Doyle, Brett Gonzalez, Tristan O'Neal and Blayne Yarger all added RBI for the Bulldogs. In total, Rolla had nine runs on 10 hits and eight walks and struck out just one time as a team.
Rolla followed that up with a tough game against CBC. The Cadets got out to the first lead with a run in the second, but the Bulldogs responded with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1. CBC came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at three. The two teams played two more scoreless innings before the game was called in the sixth due to unsafe playing conditions.
Pound toed the rubber for the Bulldogs and had a great performance on the mound. He allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, in five innings of work. He allowed just two base hits, while striking out eight and walking four.
Offensively, Rolla did most of their damage with the bat on their shoulder, as they walked seven times and had just two base hits. Pound and Gonzalez had the two hits and each swiped a bag and scored a run. Gonzalez added two walks, while Pound walked once. Yarger scored Rolla's other run in the contest.
Rolla will play in bracket play on Friday, but their opponent had not yet been determined.
