ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T will be sending a contingent of eight swimmers to the NCAA Division II Championships – the second time in the last three years that the Miners have eight heading to the national meet – that will take place later this month in Greensboro, N.C.

Four of the eight qualified through individual events, while the other four made the field through relay teams that made the NCAA qualifying standard.  The four that made the field on an individual basis were Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston), Eirik Nielsen(Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset), Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) and Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier), while the ones who made it through the relays were Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch), Kevin McPherson(Oakdale, MN/Tartan), Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) and Joshua Umrysh(Kingwood, TX/Kingwood).

Samuelsen, who is in the national meet for the second year in a row, owns the best time of the season in the nation in the 1,650-yard freestyle of 15:20.15 that he posted in winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship last month.  Samuelsen also has the fourth-best time of the season in the 1,000-yard freestyle of 9:07.69 and is also ranked 19th in the 500-freestyle.  He will swim in all three distance freestyle events at the meet after finishing in the top 16 in the 1,000- and 1,650-freestyle a year ago.

Nielsen, the only senior among the eight heading to Greensboro, has captured 10 All-America in his three prior appearances at the national meet.  His time of 1:48.56 is the 13th-best in the nation this season in the 200-yard individual medley, while his 100-butterfly time of 48.11 seconds ranks 15th.  He will also swim on all three of the Miner relays at the meet.

Meyer will be making his third appearance at the NCAA Championships and has earned six All-America awards thus far in his Miner career.  He is ranked 11th in the 200-yard freestyle with a top time of 1:37.32 this season and also made the cut in the 100-free with his time of 44.39 seconds.  Meyer will compete in the three sprint freestyle races as well as on all three of the Miner relay teams.

Taske also made the national meet as a freshman and earned All-America honors as part of the 400-yard medley relay team.  He made the meet in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:48.57 and will also swim in the 1,000- and 1,650-freestyle races as well.

McPherson has taken part in the last two national meets and has landed five All-America awards during that span.  He will compete in the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays in Greensboro.   Shih is making his second trip to the national meet and earned an All-America award as a freshman in the 200-yard medley relay.  He will be taking part in the 400-medley and 800-freestyle relays at the meet.

The other two qualifiers, Betts and Umrysh, will be competing at the NCAA Championships for the first time.  Betts will be in the 400-yard freestyle relay, while Umrysh will race in the 400-yard medley relay.
