ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T will have two participants at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, as the national governing body announced the field for next week's meet Tuesday evening.
John Karsten (Jefferson City, MO/Blair Oaks HS) will compete in the weight throw competition next weekend in Pittsburg, Kan., while Amanda Wetzel (Keller, TX/Keller)will take part in the pole vault, where she earned All-America honors last season.
Karsten produced the 15th-best throw of the season in the weight throw over the weekend at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships of 63-8¾ -- a school record performance – as he finished second in the event at the meet.
It will be the first national meet appearance for Karsten, who will take part in the event on Friday, March 9 beginning at 2:25 p.m.
Wetzel will be making her third national appearance overall and second at the indoor championships next week. Last year, she finished 12th at the NCAA Indoor Championships – clearing 12-4½ at that meet – and later finished third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn her All-America award.
She also had the 15th-best mark in the nation in the event during the season, as she cleared 12-5½ at meets held at Central Missouri and Missouri Southern during the course of the season. She competed at the site of the national meet on two occasions this season and cleared 12-4¾ in her last appearance there on Feb. 10.
Wetzel and Karsten will be competing almost simultaneously on March 9, as the women's pole vault is scheduled to commence at 3:30 p.m.
