The Newburg boys basketball team (15-11) opened their District Tournament with a rematch against Belle on Monday, Feb. 19. The Wolves couldn't break away from Belle in the first three quarters, but a big fourth quarter carried Newburg to a 56-49 win.
Neither team was able to take control early on, as the first quarter ended in a 12-12 tie. Belle was able to take a slim 27-26 lead into the half. The third quarter was much like the first, as each team scored nine points. Belle was able to hold onto a 36-35 lead heading into the fourth.
The Wolves finally clicked in the fourth, going off for 21 points. Belle couldn't keep up in the final frame and Newburg won the game 56-49.
Landen Callahan led Newburg with 20 points, while Ryan Terry was right behind him with 18 points. Travis McWilliams added another 10 points and Caleb Austin chipped in another six.
"Close game tonight against a scrappy Belle team. Back and forth game for three and a half quarters until we were able to get some key stops in the fourth quarter," said head coach Logan Ray. "We were able to make them spread them out once we got a lead and get to the rim and the line. Execution down the stretch was the difference tonight. Glad to move on to the 2nd round and we must be ready to battle four quarters on Wednesday."
The Wolves advance to the second round, where they'll face off against Vienna on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
