The Newburg boys basketball team (14-11) finished up their regular season with a matchup against Laquey on Friday, Feb. 17. The Wolves used a big second quarter to carry themselves to a 67-49 win on Senior Night.
After taking a small 11-10 lead after a quarter of play, Newburg took control against Laquey in the second. The Wolves went off for 20 points in the quarter and strong defense on the other end gave them a 31-21 lead at the half.
Great defense helped Newburg extend their lead in the second, as they held Laquey to just six points. Another 10 points from Newburg gave them a comfortable 41-27 lead heading into the fourth.
Laquey made a late offensive push to get back into the game, but Newburg refused to take the foot off the gas. Laquey scored 22 points in the fourth, but the Wolves outdid them with 25 points of their own to finish off a 67-49 win.
Landen Callahan led the charge on Senior Night with 20 points, but fellow senior Ryan Terry wasn't far behind with 16. Hunter Mentola added 10 more points, while Travis McWilliams chipped in with eight. Caleb Austin added another seven points in the win.
Newburg will now gear up for District play, which will be hosted by Laquey. The fourth seeded Wolves will open the tournament against Belle, who enters the tournament with a 10-10 record, on Monday, Feb. 19.
