The St. James girls basketball team (12-12, 3-3 FRC) traveled to Hermann for a Four Rivers Conference game on Monday, Feb. 12. The Lady Tigers were able to hang around early, but things got away from them in the second half on the way to a 56-38 loss.
St. James played a tough first quarter, as seemed like they'd be going into the second with a 10-8 lead, but Hermann knocked down a three at the buzzer to jump out in front. It was deja vu in the second, as Hermann hit another last second three to go into the half with a 26-18 lead.
Those last second threes gave Hermann a lot of momentum, which they carried into the second half. The Lady Bearcats again won the third quarter, but St. James kept the game from getting out of hand with a nine-point third. Hermann still went into the fourth with a 39-27 lead and put things away in the final frame. The Lady Bearcats scored 17 in the fourth, as St. James ran out of gas in a 56-38 loss.
"We opened the game being really competitive. They were able to hit a three point shot at the buzzer of both the first and second quarters, so going into huddles it really seemed as if Hermann would grab momentum," said St. James head coach Terry Wells. "We tried to scratch and claw for most of the game but the wind really left our sails late. We are still working on putting together 32 minutes"
Mikaela Donnelly led the Lady Tigers with 13 points and six rebounds in the loss. Savanna Riccetti scored eight, while Ashlynn Rinehart and Hannah Marcee each added five. Marcee also pulled in six boards, Bailey Wells chipped in with four points and a team high five assists.
Hermann also won the JV game 41-35. Audrey Marcee led the St. James JV with 11, while Macy Terrill added another 10.
St. James will look to bounce back when they host St. Clair for Senior Night on Thursday, Feb. 15. They'll honor their two seniors Quinn Paulus and Kennedy Fane as they wrap up their regular season.
The District seeds have also been announced for St. James. The Lady Tigers are the sixth seed in the District and will face third seeded Blair Oaks to open the District on Monday, Feb. 19. Fatima will be the host for the tournament.
