CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri S&T got a first place performance at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships for the fifth consecutive year Saturday night as Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) captured the title in the 1,650-yard freestyle, helping the Miners secure a third place team finish at the conference meet.
Samuelsen took the lead 400 yards into the race and gradually increased it over the remainder of the race, winning with a time of 15:20.15 to shatter his school record by over nine seconds. He won the race over Indianapolis' Adam Rosipal by more than four seconds to give S&T its first title of the meet.
The Miners also got top-eight performances Saturday from Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston) as he finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 44.39 seconds, improving his provisional time in the process, while Jared Dachroeden (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) and Dylan Friesz (Round Rock, TX/Hutto) made provisional marks with their top-eight showings in the 200-backstroke. Dachroeden was fifth in 1:48.10, while Friesz placed seventh in 1:49.36.
Both had better times in the preliminary rounds, as Dachroeden had a 1:48.06 and Friesz posted a 1:48.52 in the morning.
S&T's 400-yard freestyle relay also made a provisional mark Saturday as it finished third, as the group of Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset), Meyer, Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) and Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan)recorded a time of 2:58.40.
Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) finished in 10th place in the 1,650-freestyle in 15:54.64 and Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) was 12th in 16:02.95 – both NCAA Division II provisional marks -- as was Nielsen's 10th place finish in the 100-freestyle in 45.55 seconds. Before the ngiht ended, Nielsen improved his mark to 45.33 in the leadoff leg of the 400-free relay.
Scoring spots were also secured by Noah Baden (Rose Hill, KS/Rose Hill) – who won the B-final in the 200-breaststroke -- Betts and Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan)in the 100-freestyle, Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) in the 200-backstroke and Alejandro Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegiao de Bachilles) in the 200-breaststroke along with the second 400-freestyle relay team of Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest), Dachroeden, Graham and Josh Umrysh.
The Miners finished behind Indianapolis -- who dethroned four-time champion Drury – and the Panthers to take third with 574.5 points. S&T finished well in front of fourth place McKendree in the team standings.
