The St. James girls basketball team (3-1) hosted St. Genevieve on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The Lady Tigers held off a late comeback attempt by St. Genevieve on their way to a 65-61 win.
St. James had a balanced offensive attack on Wednesday night and that started in the first quarter. Six different players scored for the Lady Tigers in the first quarter en route to 13 points. St. Genevieve held pace with 14 points of their own to hold onto a one-point lead through a quarter of play.
The Lady Tigers saw some more focused scoring in the second, as freshman Riley Whitener went off for eight points in the quarter. St. James also got scoring from Savanna Riccetti, Bailey Wells and Quinn Paulus in the quarter, as the Lady Tigers tied the game at 29 going into the half.
St. James kept building steam in the second half and had their best quarter of the night in the third. Six different players scored, including seven points from Ashlyn Rinehart. The Lady Tigers scored 21 points on the offensive end, while also playing their best defense of the night to hold the Lady Tigers to 12 points. St. James' performance on both ends of the court gave them a 50-49 lead going into the final quarter.
St. Genevieve made a late push in the fourth to get back into the game, but they needed St. James to miss some free throws. St. Genevieve sent the Lady Tigers to the line 12 times in the fourth quarter and St. James hit eight of those attempts. That performance at the line held off a 20-point quarter by the Lady Dragons, as St. James walked away with a 65-61 win.
Whitener, who was a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line in the fourth, led St. James with 16 points in the win, while also adding three steals and a pair of rebounds. Savanna Riccetti wasn't far behind with 12 points, while adding four steals, three assists and two rebounds.
The Lady Tigers did a great job forcing turnovers, as they snagged 23 steals on the night. Seven different players had multiple steals for St. James, led by Mikaela Donnelly with five. Donnelly added six points, three assists and a steal. Bailey Wells had four steals on the night, while leading the Lady Tigers on the boards with eight rebounds. She also added eight points.
St. James was back in action on Thursday, Dec. 7, but results were not available at press time. Their next action will be in the Sullivan Tournament, which kicks off on Monday, Dec. 11 when they play Owensville.
