The Rolla Fire Department Local 3987 held the first of many softball tournaments and donated over $1000 of the proceeds to the United Way of Phelps County.

Firefighter and local tournament organizer Ray Evans said “United Way gives funds to 14 charities helping many who are in need in our community. We wanted to give back to the community that impacts more than one organization.”

United Way Director Teri Beaugard said “it is a thrill to know the first responders understand how important the United Way is to a community, the board of directors, our partner agencies and I thank the Fire Department very much.” Beaugard continued by stating “most of the agencies the United Way supports do not have the ability to solicit funds on their own and depend on these contributions.”

The United Way is governed by a local board of distinguished community leaders who focus on funding those agencies who assist the most vulnerable in the community concentrating on the young and the elderly and those organizations who have the most difficulty soliciting funding on their own. This year agencies receiving funds are 2CM, the ABLE Commission, CASA, Habitat for Humanity, the Literacy Council, the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, 4-H, Senior Companions, Prevention Consultants of Missouri, the Rolla Nutrition Site, the Salvation Army, Kaleidoscope Discovery Center and the St. James Golden Age Center.
