The Newburg boys and girls basketball teams kicked off play in the Frisco League Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 25. The Wolves faced off against Plato in their first round game, falling 66-55. The Lady Wolves beat Laquey in a play-in game 42-26 to earn the chance to face off against Licking, the tournament's top seed on Monday, Nov. 27. After winning the play-in game, Newburg fell to Licking 58-23.
The boys team got off to a slow start on Saturday night, which led to their downfall against Plato. The Wolves were outscored 19-11 in the opening quarter and couldn't dig into that deficit until the fourth quarter. They were outscored 15-14 in the second quarter and 17-10 in the third to trail 51-35 going into the final frame. Newburg was able to fight back with 20 points in the fourth, but they couldn't dig out of the hole they were in, falling 66-55.
Landen Callahan led the Wolves offensively with 25 points, while Ryan Terry added 13. Travis McWilliams scored nine points and Caleb Austin chipped in with eight points. Grady Todd led Plato with 20 points and Cain Couch added another 19 points.
The girls put on a great show against Laquey to win their play-in game, led by Kylie Brookshire. The Lady Wolves' lone senior recorded a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds in a dominant performance. She also added four steals and two blocks before fouling out of the contest. Macy Suschanke added 11 points, an assist and a steal in the win. Grace Affolter was second on the team in rebounds with eight boards, while grabbing three steals and scoring five points. Kaylee Skinner led the team in assists with six, while getting three steals. As a team, the Lady Wolves had 15 steals and won the battle on the boards 38-25.
After a 42-26 win over Laquey, the Lady Wolves faced off against the tournament's top seed, Licking. Licking shot the lights out of the gym, going 9-22 from behind the arc and making 23 of their 46 attempts from the field. Newburg had turnover issues on the night, as they turned the ball over 23 times in the loss, while forcing two.
Brookshire still managed to have a double-double in the loss with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while getting Newburg's only two turnovers and blocking two shots.
Both the boys and the girls team will play in the consolation bracket on Friday, Dec. 1. The Lady Wolves will play at 4:00 and the boys will play at 7:00.
