ROLLA, Mo. – Highlighted by a record breaking freestyle performance by Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) Saturday evening, Missouri S&T's swimming team dominated the Miner Invitational for the third straight year as it won 16 of the 18 events in the two-day meet.
Samuelsen broke the facility record that had stood since 1989 in his winning performance in the event, finishing with a time of 15:53.79 to shatter the old mark by more than three seconds.
S&T also got wins in the evening session from Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston) in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.38 seconds, Alejandro Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegiao de Bachilles) in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:11.21 and Eirik Nielsen(Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset) in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.65, as well as its 400-yard freestyle relay team of Nielsen, Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista), Jared Dachroeden (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) and Meyer in a tight finish with a second S&T team with a time of 3:08.49.
The Miners' second 400-freestyle relay team of Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan), Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest), John-Martin Schmidt (Topeka, KS/Hayden) and Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) finished in 3;09.01.
Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) finished second in the 1,650-freestyle in 16:25.20, as did Dachroeden in the 200-backstroke in 1:55.42, Max Middendorf(Hudsonville, MI/Hudsonville) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:13.60 and Shih in the 200-butterfly in 1:57.38, while McPherson and Betts tied for second in the 100-freestyle as both reached the wall in 47.26 seconds.
Third place finishes came from Noah Baden (Rose Hill, KS/Rose Hill) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:14.15, Dylan Friesz (Round Rock, TX/Hutto) in the 200-backstroke in 1:57.61 and Taske in the 200-butterfly in 1:57.74, while Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) was fourth in the 1,650-free in 17:02.06 and Becker finished fifth in the 100-freestyle in 48.48 seconds along with Joshua Umrysh (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:16.12.
In the morning session, the Miners won six of the seven events contested, including taking the top two spots in both relays.
Stuart Mossop (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor) was victorious in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:13.69, as was Taske in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.04 seconds, McPherson in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.15 and Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.62 seconds.
S&T won the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Friesz, Umrysh, Taske and Betts in a time of 1:35.93, while its second team of Shih, Middendorf, Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset) and McPherson finished a close second in 1:36.25.
At the end of the session, S&T's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Taske, John-Martin Schmidt (Topeka, KS/Hayden), Samuelsen and Meyer edged the team of McPherson, Dachroeden, Graham and Nielsen by 0.40 seconds with a winning mark of 7:02.43.
The Miners had second place showings from Nielsen in the 100-butterfly in 51.14 seconds, Dachroeden in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.57 and Umrysh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.42 seconds. Graham placed third in the 400-IM in 4:16.47, as did Shih in the 100-butterfly in 51.74 seconds and Schmidt in the 200-freestyle in 1:46.81.
S&T had fourth place showings from Meyer in the 100-butterfly in 51.87 seconds, Samuelsen in the 200-freestyle in 1:48.23, Baden in the 100-breaststroke in 1:00.78 and Friesz in the 100-backstroke in 54.59 seconds, while Chavez finished fifth in the 100-breaststroke in 1:01.26 as did Mossop in the 100-backstroke in 54.72 seconds.
The Miners finished with 1,277 points in the two-day meet, well ahead of second place finisher Ouachita Baptist who came in with 767 points.
Missouri S&T's next competition will take place at the Delta State Invitational, which begins on Dec. 16 in Cleveland, Miss.
