Rolla, Mo. – For the second straight season the Missouri S&T Miners rallied from a 0-2 deficit to defeat William Jewell 3-2 in a five set thriller (22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-11) on Friday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) led S&T (9-19, 2-13 GLVC) with a career-high 15 kills.

The opening set was tightly contested with eight ties and three lead changes. The frame was tied at 15 when William Jewell (10-18, 4-11 GLVC) took control with a 7-2 run building a 22-17 lead on a double block from Maddie Wingert and Madeline Johnson. The Miners trimmed the deficit to two points but the Cardinals scored three of the final five points to take the opener 25-22.

S&T raced out to a 5-1 lead to start the second set and led for the majority of the set but was unable to close it out as the Cardinals ended the stanza on an 8-3 run overcoming a 19-17 deficit to win 25-22. WJC hit .233 percent while the Miners hit only .195. Each team had 14 kills in the frame but S&T committed six attack errors to just four for the Cardinals.

The third set was tied at 14 when the Miners went on a 5-2 run to build a 19-16 lead after a kill by Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South). Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) had a pair of kills in that run with Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) also adding one. William Jewell trimmed the deficit to 20-18 but S&T was able to force a fourth set scoring five of the final six points to win 25-19. Combs had five of the Miners 18 kills in the set while Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas)and Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) added three kills each.

S&T stormed out of the gates in set four scoring four of the first five points and never trailed on its way to a 25-18 win to even the match. The Miners led by as many as six in the stanza only to see the Cardinals cut the deficit to 21-17 on a kill from Johnson. S&T finished strong though scoring four of the final five points thanks to three WJC attack errors.

The finale saw five ties and a pair of lead changes. The Cardinals led 8-6 after the changeover but the Miners stormed back with four straight points on kills from Schlader and Meyer and a pair of errors from Stefanie Richterkessing. William Jewell cut the deficit to 10-9 after a ball handling error by Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) but that was the closest it got as S&T scored five of the final six points to win 15-11. Schlader and Meyer combined for seven of the Miners 10 kills in the stanza.

S&T finished the match recording 67 kills against 22 errors in 181 chances for an attack percentage of .249. Schulz finished with a match-high in kills and was joined in double figures by Combs with 12 while Meyer added 11. Meyer also added nine total blocks in the contest. Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) dished out 34 assists and Lauren Flowers (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) had 22 digs.

The Cardinals finished the contest registering 63 kills but committed 31 errors to finish with a hitting percentage of .161. Wingert and Elizabeth Quinn had 14 kills each for William Jewell. Alix Weigel had 29 assists while Olivia Tolberd had a match-high 32 digs.

The Miners play their final home match of the 2017 season next Tuesday hosting Rockhurst at 7 p.m.
