CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Missouri S&T's women's cross country team recorded one of its highest finishes ever at the regional level Saturday as it finished 10th at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional, while the men's team had its best regional performance in a decade as it placed 11th.
The Lady Miners were third-highest finisher among the Great Lakes Valley Conference teams at the meet, finishing behind Southern Indiana and Bellarmine with 290 points in the six-kilometer race. The team's top finisher on an individual basis was freshman Hannah Shearer (Conroe, TX/The Woodlands Christian Academy), who came in 29thplace in 22:31 that is the sixth-fastest time recorded by an S&T runner in a six-kilometer race since 2005.
Megan Schulte (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) finished in 46th place in 22:56, while Kennedy Duffy (Rochester, IL/Rochester) was 61st in 23:21. S&T's top five was rounded out by Kala Morgan (Broken Arrow, OK/Broken Arrow) in 76th place in 23:35 and Katelyn Fricke (Brimfield, IL/Brimfield) in 80th in 23:45 in the race that consisted of 197 runners.
The Lady Miners' sixth and seventh runners were Tori Bonnot (Jefferson City, MO/Jefferson City), who had a time of 24:20 and Anne Vernon (Neosho, MO/Neosho), who finished in 24:46.
Walsh's Sarah Berger captured the individual title in 21:19, while Grand Valley State took the team title by 35 points over Hillsdale.
In the men's 10-kilometer race, Joe Bindner (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt East) was the Miners' top finisher in 32nd place with a time of 32:29, tying the fifth-best performance by a Miner in a 10K race since 2005. The time also matched the second-best of Bindner's S&T cross country career in a race of 10 kilometers.
Duncan Clark (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) was the next Miner across the finish line in 44thplace in 32:50, while Garrett Blanchard (Centralia, IL/Centralia) came in 63rd place in 33:18. Connor Crabtree (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) was the next S&T finisher in 71stplace in 33:24 and Adam Kraus (Tulsa, OK/Thomas Edison Preparatory) rounded out the Miners' top five in 122nd place in the 198-runner race in 34:17.
Wil Crutcher (Rolla, MO/Rolla), who had a time of 34:45 and Bristol Hargis (Webb City, MO/Webb City), who finished in 36:21, were S&T's sixth and seventh finishers.
The Miners last finished as high as 11th at a regional meet in 2007, when they came in seventh place that season.
Grand Valley State completed the sweep of the two races by beating out Southern Indiana by 14 points for the team title, while the Miners were fourth among the GLVC schools at meet as they also finished in back of Lewis and Bellarmine. Tiffin's James Ngandu won the individual title with a time of 30:11, over a minute better than the next-best finisher, Bellarmine's Chris Striegel.
