On October 25, 2017, at approximately 7:04 p.m., officers responded to the Vineyard Christian Church located at 708 N. Main Street in Rolla in reference to the report of an attempted child abduction that had occurred at another location.
During the initial investigation, a 12 year old female juvenile reported that she was walking to church and while near the intersection of 4th and Main Street in Rolla, she was approached by an unidentified blue colored passenger car. The victim reported that as the vehicle stopped near her, four unidentified male subjects who were all wearing ski masks exited the car at which time one of the subjects produced a knife and told her to get into the car. The victim reported that she fled the scene on foot and ran to her church where she reported the incident to a church official. An extensive search of the area was then conducted by several law enforcement agencies in an attempt to locate the subjects involved in this incident, but they were never located.
During the course of the follow-up investigation, investigators re-interviewed the victim and followed up on several leads that had been developed during the investigation. As a result of the investigation, information was obtained to indicate that this incident did not happen. When confronted with the information that had been found, the victim recanted her story and admitted to investigators that the incident did not happen.
Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Adam Meyer with the Rolla Police Department’s Division of Criminal Investigations Unit at (573) 308-1213.
