The Missouri S&T volleyball game played three matches this weekend, facing off against Ohio Dominican on Friday, Oct. 13 before a doubleheader against Lake Superior State and Davis & Ellis on Saturday, Oct. 14. S&T won all three matches over the weekend.

The Missouri S&T Miners snapped its six match losing streak sweeping past Ohio Dominican in its opening match at the 10th annual Midwest Region Crossover in Aurora, Ill. on Friday afternoon. The Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of .347 which was their second highest of the season.

S&T (6-14) trailed for the early portions of the opening set but eventually came back to take a 14-12 lead on a kill from Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic). The Panthers (3-16) responded by scoring three of the next four points to even the set at 15 but the Miners countered that run by scoring five of the next six points to grab its largest lead of the set at 20-16 on a kill from Combs.

The Miners continued to hold the lead at 24-21 and had a chance to close out the set but ODU scored back-to-back points to cut the deficit to 24-23 and force S&T to call timeout. After the timeout Patricia Barreto hit the serve into the set giving the opener to the Miners 25-23. Combs and Emilee Schlader(Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) combined for nearly half of the Miners kills in the stanza.

S&T fell behind again early in set two but used a hot hitting offense to come back. The Miners hit 44.4 percent in the frame and had 20 kills led by nine from Combs. S&T built a 12-point lead but the Panthers were able to trim it to nine but the Miners closed it out scoring two of the last three points to win 25-15 and take the commanding 2-0 lead.

S&T had to come from behind again in the third set but rallied and eventually began to pull away building a 17-10 lead on a kill from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State). Ohio Dominican began to chip away at the advantage by scoring eight of the next 10 points but were unable to get any closer than one the rest of the match. The Miners closed out the match on a 6-2 run led by a pair of kills from Schlader.

Combs finished with a match-high 17 kills to lead S&T while Schlader finished with 10. Alexis White(Auburn, Wash./Riverside) and Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) each had 20 assists and Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) had a match-high 20 digs.

Alexis Young and Alyssa Hoyng led the Panthers with 10 and nine kills respectively. Ashton Barr distributed 29 assists while Anna Ficker finished with 16 digs.

After dropping the opening set the Missouri S&T Miners rallied to take the next three to defeat Lake Superior State 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 29-27) at the Midwest Region Crossover in Aurora, Ill., on Saturday morning. Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) finished with a career-high 16 kills to lead S&T (7-14) while Carlie Combs(O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) added 14 and Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) finished with 10.

The Miners held a three-point lead late in the opening and eventually got to set point at 24-22 but were unable to close the set out as the Lakers (2-15) scored the final four points to win the opener. S&T hit .175 in the opening set while Lake Superior hit .167

The Miners trailed for a majority of the second set and appeared to be staring at on 0-2 deficit as they trailed 20-16. S&T responded with an 8-1 run getting some big kills from Gannaway, Schlader and Calla Meyer (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) and also got two huge blocks from Schlader and Combs to take a 24-21 lead. The Lakers cut the margin to 24-22 when Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside)was called for being in the next but the Miners took advantage of a LSSU error to win the set 25-22 and even the match at 1-1.

S&T used a 12-3 run early in set three to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 17-9 advantage. Gannaway and Schlader combined for four kills in that run. The Lakers got as close as five points but the Miners were able to hold off the late charge getting a kill from Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and a block from Schlader and Gannaway to win 25-18.

The fourth set went back and forth early before S&T began to gain some separation building a 14-9 lead. They were still in front by four when LSSU used an 8-3 run to regain the lead at 21-20 on a service ace from Jena Tulgestke. The Miners regained the lead by scoring three of the next four points but the Lakers fought back getting to set point first. S&T tied it at 24 on a kill from Combs then the two sides proceeded to swap the next six points. With the frame tied at 27 Schlader put the Miners back in front with a solo block and then ended it on the next point with a kill.

The Miners finished the contest with .198 hitting percentage and registered 59 kills. Alexis White(Auburn, Wash./Riverside) handed out 32 assists, Combs and Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) had 18 digs apiece and Schlader finished with seven blocks.

S&T held Lake Superior to a .144 hitting percentage and 55 kills. Brooke Williams finished with 11 kills while Amanda Reid and Kyra Vezina added 10 kills each. Madison Castle finished with 28 assists and Paige Gotham had a match-high 22 digs.

The win on Saturday morning marked the 150th in the history of the Miner volleyball program dating back to 2007.

For the first time since the Midwest Region Crossover began back in 2008 the Missouri S&T Miners finished with a perfect 3-0 record after sweeping the Davis & Elkins Senators on Saturday afternoon at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led four Miners (8-14) in double figures with 12 kills.

The opening set was even at 10 when S&T went on a 9-3 run to start to pull away. They got a pair of kills from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) along with kills from Combs, Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) and Alexis White(Auburn, Wash./Riverside). The Senators (7-14) cut the deficit to five but were unable to get any closer as the Miners closed out the frame 25-19.

S&T fell behind 11-6 in the second set but after a timeout they regrouped and went on a 9-1 run to regain the lead and wouldn't relinquish it as they went onto win 25-18. The Miners hit .455 percent in the frame and were led by Schlader with five kills while Combs, Gannaway and Claire Friedlund(Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) added four each.

S&T lead throughout the last set building an early seven point cushion. D&E cut into the deficit a couple of times but each time the Miners answered with a string of points eventually building a 12 point lead and would end up winning 25-12. S&T was even better offensively in the finale with an attack percentage of .469.

Combs finished with a match-high in kills and was joined in double figures by Friedlund with 11 while Schlader and Gannaway contributed 10 kills each. Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood)handed out 25 assists and Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) added 20 digs.

Anna Gallup led the Senators with 10 kills, Zoe Craig dished out 19 assists and Kelly Smith finished with 10 digs. The Miners held D&E to a hitting percentage of .167 for the match.

S&T is back in action next Friday when it travels to St. Louis for a GLVC match against Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 7 p.m.
