ROLLA, Mo. – The Gold team opened the 2017 Green & Gold World Series Sunday by sweeping a doubleheader from the Green, taking the games by scores of 4-3 and 6-2 at the Miner Baseball Field.
The Gold team got 5 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout baseball from Luke Marcheschi(Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) in the opener and then had to hold off a seventh inning rally by the Green to take game one. Marcheschi allowed only a single to Loren Whiting and strueck out three as he carried the shutout into the sixth before turning the game over to Matt Lamb.
In the bottom of the first, the Gold got on the scoreboard on Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud)'s two-run homer, then tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth as Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Conner Forsythe added a sacrifice fly for what turned out to be the decisive run in the contest.
The Green staged a rally in the seventh with four consecutive hits, as Lucas Swindle(Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles), Tim Lira (Granger, IN/Penn) and Whiting loaded the bases ahead of Hayden Hirschvogel, who delivered a bases-clearing double down the left field line to make it 4-3.
Forsythe took over on the mound for the Gold and retired the next three hitters in order – including a strikeout along the way – to save the win for Marcheschi.
Jason Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty) had two hits for the Gold, who had five hits in the game as did the Green side; Whiting had two of the Green's five hits.
Game two saw the Green take the lead with single runs in each of the first two innings, as Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) scored on a wild pitch in the first and Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah) knocking in a run in the second as he singled home Will Hayes.
But in the third, the Gold touched Green starter Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman)for three runs to take the lead. Nelson drove in the first run with an RBI single, followed by an RBI groundout from Bracken and a hit by Forsythe to score Nelson with the go-ahead tally.
The Gold added two runs in the fourth as the result of an error and its final run in the fifth on an RBI double by Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing).
Bryan Nolan (Ballwin, MO/St. Louis University HS) picked up the win in relief, allowing three hits and striking out one in a scoreless appearance covering 3 2/3 innings.
