The Rolla cross country team ran in the Licking Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 5. It was a huge day for Rolla, as sophomore superstar Emma Puetz set a new school record to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a first place finish as a team. The boys varsity and JV also each took second place as teams.
Puetz has won all but one race she's run this season and that continued on Thursday. She beat Kimi Shank's record of 18:12, which was set in 2005, with her first place finish. Puetz came in with a time of 18:09.5, which also set records for the Licking Invitational and the course. But Puetz wasn't the only star for Rolla, as the Lady Bulldogs took the top three spots in the race. Oliva Holmes came in second with a time of 19:41, while Krista Hilmas was right behind her in third with a time of 19:56. Kate Campbell also earned a medal for the Lady Bulldogs with a 16th place finish and a time of 22:55. Faith Aguilarleon missed out on a medal by just two spots by placing 22nd with a time of 24:34, while Emma Starns rounded out the varsity girls runners with 26:10.
As a team, the Lady Bulldogs won with a dominantly low score of 33, beating second place Mansfield by 14 points. Each of the six Lady Bulldogs that ran on Thursday had personal bests on the day. Rolla ran all of their female runners in the varsity race, so they did not have anyone in the JV race.
The boys were no slouches either, as both the varsity and JV teams earned second place finishes. Alex Frisbee led the varsity race with a third place finish and a time of 16:34. This was the third straight race that Frisbee has run in the 16 minute range. Brandon Burris also medaled with a 10th place finish and a time of 17:06. Charlie Roberts was next with a solid 24th place finish and a time of 18:27 with Klyan Hunn right behind him in 25th and a time of 18:34. Wyatt Owens took 34th with a time of 19:02, while Charles Victor rounded out the varsity with a 48th place finish and a time of 20:09. As a team, they had 68 team points to finish in second behind Alton's staggering 26 points.
The boys JV also had a great showing with two medals. Daniel Read finished in third with a time of 19:59, while Johnnie Swizdor medaled with a 10th place finish and a time of 21:07. Medals only went to the top 10 runners in the JV race, so Swizdor's was the final JV medal. Tristan Lietz came in third for Rolla and also had a great finish in 13th place and a time of 22:11. Kaleb Chiles wasn't far behind in 16th with a time of 23:02, while Wesley Sutton finished in 22nd with a time of 25:10 and Riley Troup finished in 23rd with a time of 26:16.
Rolla will run in the Ozark Conference race this weekend in Springfield on Saturday, Oct. 7.
