The Rolla softball team (3-22) opened their District Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Rolla faced off against Lafayette, losing to the Lady Lancers on their home field 10-2.

The Lady Bulldogs had their share of defensive issues in their loss to Lafayette. Rolla committed a total of six errors, which led to a staggering seven unearned runs. Rolla tends to have a bit of a rotation at several positions, which opens the door for more errors from players getting used to different positions.

Emalee Grooms toed the rubber for the Lady Bulldogs, pitching a complete game. She allowed 10 runs, but only three of them were earned thanks to those errors. Grooms allowed a total of 14 base hits, walked four, hit two and struck out one.

Offensively, Rolla was able to collect base hits, but they couldn't knock those base runners in. Rolla had eight hits in the loss. Grooms had two of those hits with a triple and scored the Lady Bulldogs' only two runs. Alex Kitchens and Maycie Montgomery drove her in with Kitchens going 2-4 at the dish and Montgomery going 1-4 with a double. Kassidy Chrisco, Hannah Beucler and Alexa Foltz each had a base hit.

The loss ends Rolla's season at 3-22, but the young Lady Bulldogs will look to learn from a tough season when they return all but one of the players on their roster next season. Rolla's lineups regularly include freshmen and sophomores who had the chance to learn from their first trip to Districts.
