It may have been a day later than planned, but Rachel Butz represented the Rolla tennis team at Sectionals on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
he Sectional was originally slated to be played in Waynesville on Tuesday, but Mother Nature had other plans. With a two straight days of rain, the event was moved to Springfield so it could be played in an indoor complex. The extra day and missing school didn't throw Butz, who advanced to the State tournament by winning in straight sets.
Butz faced off against Ozark's Abigail May Taylor and fought to win a tough first set 6-4. She then went on to win the second set by a score of 6-3. The win is a big one for Rolla and their District. Butz is the first singles player to advance to the State tournament out of Rolla's District since at least 2009. 2010 is the last season on MSHSAA that has Sectional and District results on their website. Rolla has played in two Districts, nine and 10, during that span and Butz is the first player from the Lady Bulldog's District to keep punching in singles.
Glendale's Brooke E Smith won the other singles match, beating Smith-Cotton's Elizabeth Matz 6-0, 6-1 to advance as well. Ozark's Madison L Woods and Macy Dawn Abernathy won the top doubles match 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Jefferson City's Erica Lee Dunn and Bailey Leanne Higgins won the second doubles match 6-3, 6-2.
The tournament bracket for the singles and doubles State Tournaments have not been completed, so Butz's opponent and match time is still to be determined. The team tournament begins on Saturday, Oct. 7.
