COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri S&T opened its 2017-18 swimming season Friday with 10 finishes among the top 10 in various events as it competed at the Show-Me Showdown at the University of Missouri.

The Miners were competing against three NCAA Division I schools in the meet – Missouri, Missouri State and Saint Louis – as well as Lindenwood, Washington University, Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis in the 12-event competition.  S&T was sixth in the team standings with 229.5 points.

Morgan Meyer (Ruston, LA/Ruston) had the Miners' highest finish Friday by ending up in a tie for fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.35 seconds and later recorded a sixth-place showing in the 100-freestyle in 46.84 seconds.  Meyer also anchored the Miners' best relay finish Friday, posting a split of 45.87 to help S&T take fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

He was joined by Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset), Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan) and Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) on the relay that finished with a time of 3:07.85.

S&T also had a fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay behind the team of Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch), Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest), Max Grogan (Parker, CO/Legend) and McPherson as they finished in 1:26.23.

McPherson recorded a time of 1:43.05 in the 200-yard freestyle to finish seventh in the event as did Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.82, while Betts came in eighth in the 50-freestyle in 21.56 seconds and Taske was ninth in the 500-free in 4:45.18.

The Miners had a seventh place showing from its 200-yard medley relay team of Ethan Shih (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista), Joshua Umrysh (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood), Nielsen and Meyer in 1:34.83.

Taske finished in 10th in the 100-yard butterfly in 50.94 seconds, followed by Nielsen in 51.21 and Shih in 51.34.  Nielsen also finished 11th in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.22, just ahead of teammate Stuart Mossop (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor), who was 12th in 1:57.64.  Becker was 13th in the 50-freestyle in 21.74 seconds.

The Miners' next competition is slated to take place on Friday, Oct. 20 when S&T hosts Delta State.
