The Rolla tennis team wrapped up their regular season action by playing in the Waynesville Tournament on Friday, Sept. 22. The Lady Bulldogs placed in a tie for third place as a team.
Rachel Butz was Rolla's top finisher on Friday. She was the third seed in Flight A singles and got off to a great start. She cruised to an 8-0 victory over Farmington's Savannah Rippe to get things going, She followed that up with an 8-3 win over Lebanon's Hannah Lowery. The second win placed her in the championship against the Brittany Latham from Richland, the tournament's top seed. Butz put up a good fight, but fell in the match 8-3.
Rolla also had a third place finish in the B Flight of doubles with the duo of Laura McCutcheon and Shannon Chan. The Lady Bulldog pair started with a great 8-2 win over Richland's Black/Bunnel. They lost their second match to Forsythe's Hutcheson/Chambirth 3-8, which put them in the third place game. They faced off against Waynesville's Demalade/Emerson in the third place game, winning the match 8-4.
Oliva Burken and Rylee Kriete played in A Flight doubles, finishing in sixth place. They started off with a phenomenal 8-6 win over Lebanon's Myler/Adams. They lost in the second round to Right/Sapple of Farmington 8-1. They had a long fight to a medal, which started with a 6-1 win over Waynesville's Sneed and Wilkins 6-1. They then beat another Waynesville duo, Trusty/Chihosky, 6-3. That put them in the fifth place match, where they had a rematch against Myler and Adams. The Lebanon duo had the upper hand in their second match, winning 8-3.
Kathleen Beetner played in the other singles flight, losing both of her matches. She fell to Camdenton's Darby Roan 8-1, before losing to Farmington's Faith Nelson in a tough match 6-4.
"Great day of tennis. The girls played hard and enjoyed the day," said head coach Joe Schisler. "We won just about everything we thought we should and maybe more."
Farmington and Richland finished in a tie for first place in the event. Lebanon placed second, while Rolla tied with Forsyth and Osage for third.
The tournament was Rolla's last match of the regular season. They went on to play Waynesville in the first round of Districts on Monday, Sept. 25, but results were not available at press time. Any future District team matches are pending Monday's results.
