The St. James softball team (13-9) made the trip to Waynesville for a non-conference game on Wednesday, Sept. 20. The two teams traded runs blow for blow, but Waynesville made a late push to win 9-6.
St. James and Waynesville were back and forth all night long. St. James struck first with a run in the top of the first, but Waynesville instantly responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. There was only one inning where one team scored and the other didn't and that was when Waynesville scored a run in the second inning.
Each team scored a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to keep the game tight at 6-5 in Waynesville's favor. St. James knotted the game at six in the top of the sixth, but Waynesville scored three runs on the bottom of the frame to take a 9-6 lead. St. James couldn't get a run across in the seventh and Waynesville finished off a 9-6 win.
Kayla Hamilton pitched for St. James, allowing nine runs, two of which were unearned, on 10 hits and three walks. She struck out three in the loss.
Offensively, Mikaela Donnelly led the way with two RBI with a 1-3 performance at the plate and one run scored. Hamilton and Hunter Pitts each recorded a pair of hits and drove in one run. Both of Hamilton's hits were doubles. Alyssa Doris also drove in a run. As a team, the Lady Tigers had eight hits and walked twice, while striking out six times and stealing a base.
After a very busy weekend and beginning of the week, St. James will have a few days off before a trip to Vienna on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
