A tragic accident occurred in Phelps County on Sunday afternoon at about 1:30 p.m. on I-44 near the 173 mile marker, resulting in one fatality. I-44 eastbound lanes were shut down for hours.

A 2014 Volvo tractor trailer driven by Zukhriddin Khayrullaev, age 23 of Mason, Ohio was westbound on I-44 when he lost control of his vehicle. It travelled off the left side of the road, returned to the road and struck a 2015 International tractor trailer, driven by George Riser of Jerusalem, Ohio. Zukhriddin’s truck then travelled back off the road into the median and travelled into the eastbound lanes of I-44, where it struck a 2006 Dodge Caravan head-on, driven by Margaret Carter, age 52 of Maryland Heights, Mo.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan was pronounced deceased at the scene at 2:20 p.m. by Phelps County Coroner Andy Davis.  The body was transported to Null and Son’s Funeral Home. The Volvo tractor trailer and the 2006 Dodge Caravan were totaled.

This is Troop I’s first fatality for the month of September and the 19th for 2017.
