They say that defense wins championships and both squads played a lot of great defense when the Rolla soccer team (3-2) made the trip up to Jefferson City to face off against the Jays on Wednesday, Sept. 6. Scoring opportunities were few and far between, but Jeff City was able to sneak one past Drew Blair for a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs.

Rolla and Jefferson City are both strong defensive teams and they showed it on Wednesday. The first half nearly came to an end with both teams locked in a scoreless draw, but Jeff City was able to find the back of the net when Tucker Jett slipped a shot into the bottom corner of the net off a pass from Chad Hamler with just 1:33 left in the opening half.

Rolla had their share of runs, but couldn't find the back of the net. Rolla took advantage of great dribbling to work their way through the Jeff City defense in an attempt to give the Jays a different look than they typically see, but Nick Ryan was solid in goal. Rolla had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but their shot was deflected wide and the game ended in a 1-0 loss.

"Jeff City is a very good team. Their record might not show it because they play such a strong schedule but this is one of those games that will only make us better in the end," said head coach Mike Howard. "I was pleased with the way we played, our defending as a group was outstanding and we were able to create some dangerous chances in our attack."

The JV also lost 2-0 to bring their record to 1-1.

After games on back to back days, Rolla will have a week off before their next game. Next up is a trip to West Plains on Wednesday, Sept. 13.
