The Rolla volleyball team (2-3) hosted Jeff City for a match on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Lady Bulldogs gave Jeff City all they could handle, but they fell just shy of forcing a third set in a 25-20, 25-23 loss.

After struggling against Kickapoo last week, the Lady Bulldogs played a much cleaner game against Jeff City. Head coach Stephanie Pritchett was particularly pleased with their improved passing.

"One important factor was our passing," said coach Pritchett. " We passed much better than last game and played good defense.Macy Moreland received a total of 19 serves and passed above a two on a three point scale. That means that our setters always had the option of setting at least two hitters."

Pritchett judges passing on a three point scale and rated Rebecca Janke at a three, as well as Megan Brown, Courtney Colench, Loran Pritchett and Macy Moreland as two or above. Sophie Parsons led the team in assists with 11.

That better passing translated to improved hitting. Megan Brown led the team with eight kills, but the team recorded 20 as a unit.

The Lady Bulldogs put up a good fight in the second set, but fell a few points shy. They looked great to open the second set, building a solid lead before Jeff City went on a run to close the gap. In the end, Jeff City had the stronger finish in the second set to claim the win in straight sets, but the match was a confidence booster despite the loss.

"I was very pleased with how we bounced back from last week. The girls were prepared and they played with a lot of confidence," said coach Pritchett. "We made errors in judgement sometimes that affected the play at the moment, but we kept our heads."

Rolla returns to the conference when they host Joplin on Thursday, Sept. 7.
