The Rolla (1-3) and Newburg (0-2) softball teams were both in action on Monday, Aug. 28. It was a tough night of softball for both teams, as Rolla and Newburg were both mercy ruled in their matchups.

Moersch knocked out by knee injury

The Lady Bulldogs were dealt a tough blow on Monday when they lost their season pitcher in two weeks during their matchup with Union. Lauren Moersch, who has pitched every game so far this season with Emalee Grooms sidelined with a shoulder injury, was only able to get one out in the second inning before she was forced to leave with a knee injury. Moersch allowed nine runs, seven of which were earned on eight hits and two walks before leaving the game.

Chloe Wood came in to relieve Moersch, pitching an inning and a third. She allowed three runs on two hits and six walks before being replaced by Cheyanne King. King pitched the final inning of the contest, allowing three runs on two hits, four walks and a hit batter.

Rolla was mercy ruled 15-0 in four innings, recording just five hits in the game. Grooms, Moersch, Krystynn Hufford, Maycie Montgomery and King each had one hit in the loss.

The JV game didn't go much better, as the Lady Bulldogs fell 11-5.

With Moersch out of the lineup, Grooms attempted to make her comeback to the mound on Tuesday, Aug. 29 when the Lady Bulldogs faced off against Pleasant Hope R-6, but results were not available at press time. Rolla will face off against Parkview for their first conference matchup on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Lady Wolves nearly no hit by Russellville

The Newburg softball team couldn't contain the Russellville offense on Monday night, allowing runs in all five innings of their contest. Macy Suschanke pitched all five innings in the loss, allowing 17 runs, eight of which were earned. Suschanke walked seven and hit four to go along with 11 hits and one strikeout.

Offensively, Newburg couldn't get the ball rolling, as Grace Affolter recorded the only base hit for the Lady Wolves.

Newburg followed up the loss with a matchup against Belle on Tuesday, Aug. 29, but results were not available at press time. They will face off against Stoutland on Wednesday, Aug. 30.
