The Lady Bulldog volleyball team (1-1) made the trip up to Columbia for a matchup with Hickman on Thursday, Aug. 24. Rolla lost the match in straight sets, but both came down to the wire, ending 22-25, 24-26.
Rolla's biggest downside were the occasional mental errors that can come from young teams. Head coach Stephanie Pritchett shuffled the lineup a bit and played some people in new positions. Some of the highlights included junior captain Shelby Ply and Megan Brown racking up six kicks, while Ami Ikuenobe and Rebecca Janke each added four. Those kills came on the back of great setting from Loran Pritchett and Sophie Parsons, who had 11 and eight assists, respectively. Pritchett also added five service aces.
After falling in the first set 22-25, trailed 18-22 in the second set. The four point gap put a fire in Rolla's belly and they managed to tie the game at 24. Unfortunately, Hickman took the last two points and the game ended on an ace. Coach Pritchett saw this game as a learning experience.
"We actually played pretty well, but made some mental errors that were the difference in the match. Once again people played in some different positions where we seemed to be struggling and filled in the gaps nicely," said Pritchett. "I'm proud that we kept fighting, and with a little tweaking we will correct those errors!"
The JV and freshmen teams also lost in straight sets. The JV fell 20-25, 18-25, while the freshmen lost 9-25, 18-25.
Rolla will return home for their first home game of the season when they bring cross-town rival St. James in for a match on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
