The Celebration of Nations committee at Missouri S&T will be hosting their second annual 5K color run and walk this Saturday, August 19, at 9 a.m. at the Ben Juan Park pavilion in Rolla, located near 14th Street just next to Splash Zone.

Atoosa Khiabani, one of the Celebration of Nations coordinators, said that following last year’s color run success, the committee chose to have a second, annual race. The idea to do a color run for a fund raising event was modeled off of the success of other organizations on campus.

Last year, Atoosa said, the color run raised around $1255, with 150 runners participating in the colorful event, running and walking with various dye powders tossed at them to decorate their clothes. The powder will be dyed cornstarch, which is completely non-toxic and environmentally safe.

Atoosa said they would like to have the same-sized crowd take part this year, if not more. All proceeds of the event go directly to the Celebration of Nations non-profit organization to benefit this year’s festivities.

“There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes,” said Atoosa. The funds raised by the race go towards making sure vendors and booths have electricity, and making sure all arrangements with the city are properly made. The money raised by the run are used to make sure the celebration is fun and welcoming for everyone when the time comes.

“We would like to spread the word to people who haven’t heard of Celebration of Nations,” said Atoosa. “If you like running or walking this is going to be a fun event.”

The Celebration of Nations committee is still looking for volunteers to get involved with the event. Volunteers can help with set up and cleanup, hold signs with directions for the runners, or man a color station. Atoosa confirmed they are still looking for around 33 volunteers on Saturday, and one more volunteer for Friday.
