Earlier this month, over 60 visitors attended the open house at the new Guiding Star Mid-Missouri location, 116 North Jefferson Street, in Saint James. This newly-remodeled center exists to build up women and families in the St. James community. Guiding Star Mid-Missouri is a pro-woman and pro-life movement outreach organization,” says Executive Director Alison Guzman.
“Our goal is to create a holistic, comprehensive center that provides support for natural means of family planning, pregnancy support for planned and unplanned pregnancies, fertility care, childbirth, breastfeeding, and family life. We want to be relevant to everyone in our community; whether they are a 17-year-old in an unplanned pregnancy, a husband and wife expecting their first child—or number 10, a woman struggling with infertility, a new mom trying to learn how to breastfeed, or just someone looking to learn more about natural methods of fertility care and planning.”
Guzman says Guiding Star strives to benefit all women, regardless of their social-economic circumstances. “We make life-changing connections between women in need and those who can help,” she said.
The organization is hands-on, providing classes in family planning, pregnancy, parenting, lactation, and family life. With the help of community partners and sponsors, Guiding Star Mid-Missouri threw a baby shower for each of the moms who attended their healthy pregnancy classes. According to Guzman, the organization has already helped 36 women, many families and have seen nine babies born since opening their doors on February 6 of this year.
As the sixth Guiding Star Center and the first in the United States to start without a previously existing pregnancy center, Guzman says they began with a vision of what the Guiding Star model could accomplish here in Missouri. She says the team gratefully acknowledges the kind and caring business people of the community who have contributed so much to help them get started, such as Dave, from Phelps County Rental, Rhonda, from Flooring Factory Outlet, and Josh, from Lone Oaks buildings.
The organization realizes monetary and material donations from businesses are not the only foundation upon which Guiding Star stands. Guzman notes individual volunteers have given of their time and talent, in spending countless hours repairing and painting walls, and installing windows, locks, flooring, doors, trim, toilets, vanities and more.
“Their fortitude shows the strength of civic commitment right here in St. James,” she added. “Because of those who graciously invest in the community, Guiding Star has already been able to stand by their clients and constantly reach out to others. However, those efforts require ongoing support, so all are welcome to join in whatever capacity they are able.”
