An Illinois man is charged with statutory sodomy and child molestation after allegedly having sexual intercourse with a child.

Terry A. Putnam, age 54 of Caseyville, Illinois, was arrested on June 18 after the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department Deputies “received a complaint that an adult male was observed having sexual contact with a child,” according to a release issued by the Sheriff’s department.

According to the release and the probable cause statement, the victim was an 11-year-old child.

In the probable cause statement, the victim stated they were visiting a Rolla residence with their family and stayed that night in the living room with their sibling. The victim stated Putnam came out of his bedroom, adjacent to the living room, and told the victim he had something for them in his bedroom.

The probable cause statement says the victim reported that “when she got into the bedroom, Putnam pushed something in front of the door to block it.” According to the document this item was later identified as a plastic storage shelf unit. The victim stated Putnam then picked them up and placed them on the bed before turning off the light.

According to the probable cause statement, Putnam tried to forcefully remove the victim’s clothing, and the victim physically and verbally resisted. The victim also stated Putnam “kept asking her things she couldn’t hear,” and they kept telling him to stop.

The probable cause statement says the victim’s father woke up and went to the living room where his children were sleeping, and did not see the victim. According to the statement, the father went to Putnam’s room and tried to open the door. When he got it open he saw the victim with her clothes mostly removed and Putnam moving to the other side of the bed. According to the probable cause statement, the victim came out of the bedroom and told the father what had happened.

Putnam was arrested at approximately 3:30 in the morning, according the probable cause statement and the press release issued by the sheriff’s department. Putnam was incarcerated at the Phelps County Jail with a bond set at $500,000.
