The Rolla tennis team took part in the Springfield Invitational on Wednesday, April 12. Rolla was without several of their players and had to make some last second changes, but managed to placed 14th out of 26 teams in the event.
Rolla only had one doubles team in the event, as one player wasn't able to attend and one was out with an injury. As a result, their second team was a scratch and Rolla played Nick Roshan and Pranal Madria. The duo played the winner of a play-in match for their first action of the tournament, losing to Branson's Matthew Coleman and Zach Bliss 8-2. Bliss and Coleman went on to finish in the top eight.
Rolla then had two singles players in Haris Zahoor and Blake Riedle. Zahoor had a first round bye before losing to Nixa's Todd Jones 8-4. Riedle beat Webb City's Cameron Wever 9-7, with Riedle trailing until the score hit 7-6 before winning the last three games on his way to a victory. He then lost 8-0 to the tournament's fourth seed.
"Riedle had a great match that I think might take him towards the next level of his game. Zahoor’s result is also good considering how the next match went with the top seed," said head coach Joe Schisler. "Roshan and Madria were also more competitive than the score showed. They were tied at 2 all, and had 4 deuce games which they just didn’t find a way to finish. That is from a team that we just kind of threw together because of other circumstance."
Rolla will have either JV or varsity action on four of the five weekdays next week, starting with a match against Jeff City on Monday, April 17.
