The Newburg boys basketball team (14-5) faced off against Macks Creek for a rescheduled game on Monday, Jan. 30. Tyler Newton returned to the lineup for the Wolves and helped Newburg pull out at 49-43 win.
Newburg got out to a quick lead against the Pirates with a 13-point first quarter and strong defense. The Wolves held Macks Creek to just nine points in the first to carry a four point lead into the second quarter. Macks Creek then flipped the script in a defensive ballgame by holding Newburg to just eight points in the second quarter. The Wolves managed to hold onto their lead, but not by much, carrying a 21-19 lead into the half.
The Wolves were able to open up that lead a bit more into the second with some more great defense and their best offensive quarter of the game. 15 points gave Newburg a 36-27 lead going into the final quarter.
While Newburg had a solid lead, Mack Creek wasn't giving up. The Pirates outscored Newburg 16-13 in the fourth quarter, but the Wolves were able to hold on for a 49-43 win.
Ryan Terry led Newburg with 14 points, while Newton added 10 in his return to the lineup. Landen Callahan and Logan Doerr were each a point shy of double figures with nine points a piece. Austin Zolleman caused a lot of problems defensively for the Wolves, scoring 22 of Macks Creek's 43 points.
Newburg was back in action at home against Belle on Tuesday, Jan. 31, but results from that game were not available at press time. The Wolves will next host Cuba on Friday, Feb. 3.
