The Rolla Kmart announced on Jan. 4 they will be one of many stores closing at their location on S. Bishop. While a specific date is not currently known, shoppers can expect Kmart’s doors to finally close sometime in March. Shoppers can also expect a liquidation sale occurring around the same time. Exact details about the sale have yet to be decided.

Sears Holdings, Kmart’s parent corporation, released a statement saying the decision to close certain stores was a hard one, and they attempted to stay open for as long as possible to preserve local jobs. Current employees will have the opportunity to apply for other Kmart positions in nearby areas.

The Kmart brand originated over a century ago in downtown Detroit, as a small dime store owned by a man named Sebastian Spering Kresge. Several decades and expansions later, Harry Cunningham, under the role of President, opened the first official Kmart in Garden City, Michigan.

More details about the Rolla Kmart closing will be added as they are announced.
