River Trails District of Ozark Trails Council is seeking both sponsors and golfers for a tournament it is hosting at Piney Valley Golf Course at Fort Leonard Wood on June 5.

The tourney will benefit the nearly 900 Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Explorers in the River Trails District, which serves Phelps, Pulaski, Dent and Texas counties.

“It’s a chance to do something many love while benefiting an organization that has a rich history of turning boys into our leaders of tomorrow,” said River Trails Assistant District Chairman Dr. Bill Moorkamp. “So many boys in our community needs Scouts, and this will help with that through camperships,” said Moorkamp, a Rolla dentist who volunteers for Scouting.

The Boy Scouts of America are on the cusp of its Centennial anniversary. In 1910, the Boys Scouts were founded in this country, having been modeled after the group in England formed by retired Gen. Lord Baden Powell.

The tourney will be played on the par-72, 18-hole Piney Valley Golf Course at the Fort, which runs along the Big Piney River. The course also offers golfers a driving range, putting green, chipping area, pro shop and a snack bar.

Golf carts also will be made available for members of the scramble-type tournament, which begins at 1 p.m.

Also, prizes will be awarded to the top finishers.
Entry fees are $65 per person, $260 a team, which includes four players. Moorkamp stressed the importance of getting teams to participate.

The River Trails District, which includes an office and Scout Shop in Rolla, is accepting sponsorships of $50 for carts; $100 for a tee and hole sponsorships for varying amounts of $500 and $1,000.

“We’re hoping for a great turnout,” said River Trails District Executive Marilyn Lopez. “Our goal is to raise about $2,500, and help benefit our district and our Scouts.”

“It’s on a Friday afternoon, and we invite golfers in offices to join us for this worthwhile cause,” Lopez said.
