An innovative, barrier-pushing ballet company is making a stop in Rolla tomorrow, and they have more than a performance on their itinerary.
The James Sewell Ballet will be offering a free Mind Body Workshop program tomorrow afternoon prior to the company’s performance at Leach Theatre in Castleman Hall later in the evening.
“It should be very interesting because the founder of the ballet will be here,” Leach Theater Marketing Representative Roy Jacobs said.
JSB is known to use classical ballet technique as a foundation for innovative and contemporary choreography.
According to JSB Operations Manager Mary Jo Peloquin, the workshop is designed to expose participants to the connection dancers use to connect their thoughts to their movements.
“While our bodies are instinctually and autonomously tuned to respond to situations at hand, we are also equipped to design our movements in highly sophisticated ways,” Peloquin said. “Dance represents a practiced approach to the design of movement.”
Peloquin says the workshop is designed to demonstrate the accessibility and benefits of “intentful” movement.
Some of those benefits include improved learning ability, better retention of learned materials, calming effects, focusing techniques, and a more connected feeling.
The workshop will take place at 1:30 p.m. in room 143 of Castleman Hall.
Space is limited to 20 participants and reservations are required.
To reserve a space call 341-4219.
Comfortable clothing is recommended for the 60 to 90 minute program.
The performance begins at 7:30, and tickets are available through the Leach Theatre box office.
Tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for children and $10 for Missouri S&T students.
Tickets for the first 75 Missouri S&T students are free.
