Rolla, Mo. -

It’s still not too late to sign up to host a block party for National Night Out: America’s Night Out Against Crime.
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, the Rolla Police Department and Phelps County Sheriff’s Department will once again sponser the local NNO.  The event is designed to raise communtiy awareness about crime and drug prevention.
Kerri Shults of the Rolla Police Department said that last year was the first year Phelps County had participated in NNO.  This year the sponsors hope to have around 60 registered block parties, double last year’s total.
Every registered block party will have at least one law enforcement officer in attendance.  Shults said that this is to let officers get to know the people they serve as well as to provide more information to citizens on how they can prevent crime in their neighborhoods.
The local NNO kickoff will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at Lions Club Park.
On the day of the event, residents and businesses can participate by turning on their outside lights and coming outside to visit with neighbors and law enforcement officers.
Block party registration forms are still available at the Rolla Police Department or online at rollacity.org.  For more information, contact Kerri Shults at 573 364-1213 or visit nationalnightout.org/nno.
