A Rolla business owner serving as a government affairs liaison is in Washington, D.C., today to continue his advocacy of standardizing regulations for income-tax preparers.

Certified Public Accountant Larry L. Gray, owner of Alfermann, Gray & Co. LLC, has spent the last two years working on the Tax-Preparer Project with the National Association of Tax Professionals. In promoting new regulations focused on protecting consumers by requiring tax-preparers to register with the Internal Revenue Service, pass minimum-requirement tests, complete continuing education requirements and maintain standards of ethics, Gray strives to further professionalize the industry.

First-phase implementation of the recommendations promulgated by the NATP will begin Sept. 1, Gray said.

All paid tax-preparers who are neither CPAs, attorneys nor enrolled agents will need to register online with the Internal Revenue Service between September and the beginning of the next tax season in 2011, according to Gray.
