A "border security" bill introduced by Senators Claire McCaskill and Charles Schumer passed the Senate Thursday morning. The bill will invest $600 million in border security without adding to the country’s deficit, according to the senators. The legislation was passed by unanimous consent.
The bill is paid for by raising fees on companies that choose to outsource high-paying American jobs. A number of foreign-controlled companies that operate in the United States rely heavily on H1B and L visas to import foreign workers, rather than hire American workers. McCaskill said she believes the higher fees will encourage these businesses to think twice before passing over American workers in favor of outsourcing.
The legislation provides millions to hire new Border Patrol agents and deploy unmanned aerial vehicles (frequently referred to as drones) in order to better monitor the border.
