A financial deal between Missouri public universities and Gov. Jay Nixon may be in place, but it leaves universities searching for ways to accommodate the loss of funds.
At Missouri S&T, a 5 percent cut from the state would trim appropriations by about $2.6 million, according to Dr. Barbara Hall. It could cause a deficit between $1.37 million and $2.9 million in fiscal year 2011.
“The verbiage summarizes the thoughts and ideas of members of the Budgetary Affairs Committee,” Hall said in an e-mail, stressing the figures did not represent official numbers.
Hall, who heads the committee, made her report during the Senate’s Thursday meeting based the report on numbers provided by Carol Heddinghaus, the director of budget planning.
A potential deficit varies because it depends on whether faculty receive salary raises between zero and 2 percent.
This may happen despite revised estimates for the current fiscal year showing S&T with a surplus of $1.88 million. In all, approximately $5 million could be lost in a worst-case scenario.
