Of the approximately 4,000 students in Rolla Schools, half of them, about 2,000, are enrolled in summer school.

As part of a National Science Foundation initiative called EarthScope, 43 earthquake recording stations will be placed in Missouri and southern Iowa in 2010-2011. Dr. Stephen Gao, a seismologist in the geology and geophysics program at Missouri University of Science and Technology, is working with four students from Missouri universities to conduct field surveys and identify locations for the stations.

Summerfest boasted a beauty pageant, doubles tennis tournament, sand volleyball, inflatables, arts, crafts, food vendors, kids activities, military displays, science exhibits, rides, the Tour De-Phelps, skateboard games, the Rolling Thunder parade, trike and bike races, motorcycle rodeo, a poker run, a fire truck pull, a  burnout contest, and a free street dance.

Explosives Camp at Missouri S&T kicked off Monday with 20 area high school students getting an up close and personal view of the power of explosives.

Members of the St. James Forestry Board met Thursday to discuss trees that may need to be removed during the Safe Routes to Schools grant project.

Mayor Dennis Wilson explained the goal of examining the trees.
“They will look at the trees and make a decision what to do with each tree that presents a problem,” Wilson said. “For some, it may only require cutting the roots.”

Rolla Public Schools’ BRAVO program (Building Relationships And Volunteer Opportunities) got a “bravo!” from members of Rolla’s Board of Education last week when Jenni Hushaw, director of volunteer services and public information, presented a year-end report at their May meeting.

 Dr. Nuran Ercal, professor of chemistry at Missouri University of Science and Technology and an expert in the study of lead toxicity and free radicals in biological systems, has been named the Richard K. Vitek/Foundation for Chemical Research Endowed Chair in biochemistry at Missouri S&T. The position takes effect June 1.

Summer vacation had yet to begin, but it felt like it had as diplomas were bestowed upon 326 graduates during Rolla High School’s Commencement on Friday in a steamy Missouri S&T Gale Bullman Multi-purpose building.
