Chiefs knock off Bulldogs last week, 57-35.

For the second straight week the Rolla High School football team had more total yardage than did its opponent and is averaging an eye-popping 33.0 points after two games.

However, the Bulldogs find themselves 0-2 and having been outscored by five touchdowns over that same span.

Needless to say, RHS head coach Willie Howard and his staff will be concentrating on some tackling and other defensive drills in practice this week. They will also probably be looking at the kicking game as well.

The defending Ozark Conference champion Springfield Kickapoo Chiefs scored on all but two possessions until going into victory formation to run out the final seconds and posting a 57-35 win over Rolla Friday.

The Chiefs, 9-0 in the conference last year, starts this year off 2-0.
Rolla again displayed the ability to move the football. The two teams combined for 909 yards of total offense on Friday - RHS 458, Kickapoo 451.

The Bulldogs have started off the season against two of the highest-regarded opponents in the league and have allowed a total of 105 points.

“We did a lot of things pretty well,” Howard said. “Our punting didn’t help us in the field position battle. And we did not tackle well enough to keep us in the game.

“They were really good. Their backs are really good runners and were intent on scoring when they got into the open field. And they did a good job scouting our passing game; they were up on our receivers all night.”

Some short RHS punts and kickoffs gave Kickapoo small fields to navigate, including the first score of the game, when Kickapoo went 54 yards in four plays, with junior running back Malachi Stout breaking off a 37-yard scoring run. After bobbling the following PAT hold, senior Brad Jarman rolled right and found junior Sam Clayton in the endzone for the two-point conversion.

The Bulldogs were again forced to punt on their next possession and a short kick, plus a 32-yard return by junior Tre Woodring, put the ball at the RHS 24. Jarman, one of the two quarterbacks the Chiefs shuffle into their lineup, scored on a 10-yard run.

RHS again punted and Kickapoo took over at its own 49 yardline. In six plays Kickapoo made it 22-0 on a two-yard TD run by senior running back Tony Grant.

After forcing the Chiefs into their only punt of the night, the Bulldogs finally got the offense going in the second period. RHS drove 88 yards on 11 plays, with quarterback Zach Brown scoring on a four-yard run.

Kickapoo answered immediately with an eight-play, 53-yard drive, with Grant capping things by rolling right on a 10-yard TD run, and the Chiefs led 29-7 at the 6:26 mark of the second period.

Rolla’s first of three turnovers followed. Senior linebacker Ben Wilken  made the first of his two interceptions, setting up a Stout 10-yard TD run, with the PAT making it 36-7.

“On that first pick we were running a hook-and-ladder and had Andy (Satulla) on the sideline,” Howard said. “We thought we were going to have a big play, then (Wilken) came out of nowhere.”

Kickapoo ended Rolla’s next drive when Wilken picked off a high Brown throw, and three plays later Grant got loose on a 36-yard scoring run, and it was 43-7.

RHS would score on the last play of the first half, when Brown fired a pass to senior wideout Caleb Copeland, who made the catch and got into the left corner of the endzone as time expired. It was 43-14 at intermission.

Grant made it 50-14 three plays into the second half by taking a handoff, getting to the left sidelines and going 68 yards for a TD.

The Brown-to-Copeland combo connected again on Rolla’s next possession, as Copeland took a screen pass down the left sidelines for a 48-yard TD haul.

Kickapoo followed with its final TD. After a 33-yard pass from Jarman to sophomore Peyton Moore, Stout ran 15 yards up the middle for the touchdown.

Rolla would score twice more in the fourth quarter - on a 30-yard run by Satulla and on a 24-yard run by junior running back Wyatt Kinder.

Brown hit on 12-of-21 passes for 193 yards and rushed for 95 yards on 17 carries while Satulla, a senior running back, rushed for 135 yards on 20 attempts. Copeland caught four passes for 96 yards.

“Copeland kind of showed us what he has in the bag,” Howard said.

Grant erupted for 204 rushing yards on 18 carries and four touchdowns for the Chiefs while Stout ran for 83 yards and three scores.

The Bulldogs return home this Friday for another league game against Springfield Parkview. Kickoff at Lions Memorial Field is set for 7 p.m.

Howard said RHS came out of the Kickapoo game in good shape health-wise and added that junior quarterback Kyle Morris, who missed last week with an ankle injury, will be back against Parkview as part of the Bulldogs’ two-quarterback system with Brown.
