Kyser puts on a show; rushes for 301 yards and two TDs.

Forget cartoons.

It was the Zayne Kyser Show on Saturday morning in Salem.

Kyser rolled over and around the Kirksville defense on Saturday, rushing for 301 yards on 26 carries and scoring two touchdowns, as the Tigers posted a season-opening 34-12 non-league victory.

The game was originally scheduled to begin Saturday afternoon, but due to the heat index the start was moved to 10:30 a.m. Still, the field temperature prior to the opening kickoff was 96 degrees and rose to as much as 110 degrees.

In all the Tigers erupted for 486 yards of total offense - 420 of it coming on the ground, as Kyser averaged 11.6 yards-per-carry.

After a scoreless first period Salem tallied a pair of touchdowns in the second period to take a 12-0 halftime lead. Salem led 26-6 entering the fourth quarter.

Kyser broke off a school-record 99-yard TD run in the third period.

Kirksville scored solo TDs in the third and fourth periods.

Also for Salem sophomore quarterback Zak Eplin rushed for 44 yards and a TD while junior running back Derek McClain rushed for 35 yards and a TD.

Eplin and junior Dylan Wisdom combined to hit on 9-of-12 passes for 66 yards. Senior wideout Paul McClain caught five passes for 47 yards. Wisdom hit Triston DuBois with a TD pass.

On defense Kyser, a linebacker, had a team-high 18 tackles - 12 solo - while senior Jacob Plank had 14 total tackles and junior rover Aaron Hodges 12.

In the junior varsity game between the two teams on Friday Salem shut out Kirksville 26-0.

Salem is scheduled to host Reeds Spring Friday in non-league play (7 p.m.).
